WP Plugin: WP_DeliciousPost by DCoda

If you’re a subscriber to my del.icio.us bookmarks feed, you’ll find that this post is among the newest items in my latest bookmarks. Of course, assuming that this new WordPress Plugin I just installed works perfectly with my blog.

This plugin is called WP_DeliciousPost by Damian of DCoda.com. What it does is fairly simple:

WP_DeliciousPost is a free WordPress plug-in that auto submits your post and pages to Delicious as you publish them.

Upon reading more about this plugin, one of its requirements stopped me on dead on my tracks before I could click on the download link.

Requirements

  • The Curl Library must be installed in your PHP installation.
  • WordPress 2.5 if you with to use WordPress tags

What the heck is Curl Library? A quick Google-up turned up this neat information:

PHP supports libcurl, a library created by Daniel Stenberg, that allows you to connect and communicate to many different types of servers with many different types of protocols. libcurl currently supports the http, https, ftp, gopher, telnet, dict, file, and ldap protocols. libcurl also supports HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading (this can also be done with PHP’s ftp extension), HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, and user+password authentication.

These functions have been added in PHP 4.0.2.

Okay, from my understanding of how WP_DeliciousPost works in-principle, this PHP library is what the plugin uses to automatically submit my latest blog posts to del.icio.us. Upon checking my version of PHP that comes with my hosting, I am confident to say that my hosting setup supports this plugin.

The plugin is quite configurable, giving us the option to choose whether static pages in our blogs will also be submitted to del.icio.us or not since the regular posts are submitted by defualt (duh!). You could also opt to use your built-in tags as the same tags that will be added in the del.icio.us meta data. Or you could choose to use the posts categories as tags instead.

This plugin is simple and quite powerful. Promoting our posts to social networks has never been this easy.

Download this plugin here. Thanks to ChrisG for blogging about this first and big props to Damian for this wonderful plugin.
