When jokes and passion go too far

I‘m not a fan of Vice Ganda, let that be known. Nor am I a die-hard Kapuso fan. But I do find most of his jokes and punch lines funny. There’s no doubt that his wit and humor has contributed immensely to his fame. However, the latest controversy he’s in right now just goes to prove that no matter what your celebrity status is, you’re still prone to making mistakes.

It all started when he made a joke about rape and Jessica Soho in his sold-out concert last May 17:

Ang hirap nga lang kung si Jessica Soho magbo-bold. Kailangan gang rape lagi. Sasabihin ng rapist, ‘Ipasa ang lechon.’ Sasabihin naman ni Jessica, ‘Eh nasaan yung apple?'”

Jessica Soho – one of the biggest, no pun intended, and most respected names in broadcast journalism has been defended with high passion by her colleagues from GMA 7. They took to Twitter and criticized Vice Ganda for his ‘tasteless joke’ about rape and not just about Ms Soho herself. Framing the issue with a degree of objectivity has given the GMA 7 news personalities the moral high ground.

Until Arnold Clavio joined the fray and his misplaced passion in defending Ms Soho soiled the valiant efforts of his colleagues.

It’s given that Vice Ganda’s joke about rape was tasteless and wrong, but for Clavio to argue that the jokes should have been aimed at ABS-CBN personalities instead shows that he is no different from the top host of Showtime.

Just recently, Vice Ganda has offered his public apology to Jessica Soho and to all those who were offended by the joke. Hopefully this puts the issue to rest and that all sides have learned the lessons they should.
