Remember Google Video? Yes, Google’s video search engine that briefly attempted to become king of online video hosting until YouTube came along. Google couldn’t compete so they did the next best thing, bought YouTube back in 2006 and tried to make the two services co-exist. Which apparently led to nothing but a redundancy for Google.

Two years ago, Google stopped taking uploads to Google Video. Now they’ve just announced that later this April videos uploaded to the service will no longer be available for playback. Google Video is reverting back to a video search engine, as if YouTube is not the first place people go to whenever they search for online videos.

A little screencast I recorded circa 2007

However, Google Video users have until May 13, 2011 to download their uploaded videos on the service for backup/archiving purposes or for its transfer to YouTube or other video hosting services. After that, all videos on the service would be deleted.

As it turns out, I have two videos on Google Video that I uploaded three years ago. The first was a screencast tutorial on How to Share Your Google Calendar. It was actually an exercise of my screencasting skills. The other video is a talk by Jun Lozada, the primary witness on the NBN-ZTE corruption controversy, which was recorded using my Sony Ericsson K800i phone.

So for old times’ sake and to keep my brief foray in to video creation I’ve decided to download the two videos which Google gave me in the FLV format. It’s now a matter of deciding whether to upload them to YouTube or Vimeo.

Do you also have videos on Google Video? Would you save it before gets deleted?

Here’s something the blog-o-sphere and new media pundits would certainly talk about, movie premieres at YouTube. According to Reuters blog report:

YouTube would premiere “Home,” a film about the environment produced by Luc Besson, the agency said.

A Paris-based partner development manager for YouTube in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, was quoted by the agency as saying, “We’re more than just dogs on skateboards.”

This would be the first simultaneous debut of a film in theaters and the Internet. It’s said that this is another attempt at attracting more advertisers to YouTube which so far has been one of the financially controversial acquisitions of Google, Inc.

Details are still sketchy but one thing that popped into my mind was, “What’s Home? It’s certainly not a Hollywood blockbuster but something in the genre of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth“.

Like this report, I could find little details about this environmental film that’s soon to have its premiere on YouTube aside from theaters. So far, all I’ve found is this little message from French producer and film maker Luc Besson via Facebook:

“I have always been a lover of the Planet, and I have tried to show people its most beautiful aspects through my movies Le Grand Bleu, Atlantis and Arthur and the Minimoys. It was thus natural for me to join Yann in the production of this magnificent project.”

I hope that the movie would do well both in theaters and on YouTube. Who knows, if this would be a success, other films may follow suit. Though much to the joy of movie pirates, me thinks.

As reported by paidContent.org, Google rarely advertises its directly advertises its products. When it does, people certainly notices them. The latest of which is a collection of short clips highlighting the features of its own browser, Google Chrome.

The web giant commissioned indie illustrators and creative shops to make the shorts, all 11 videos of it and placed it on its own YouTube channel, Google Shorts.

Here’s my favorite clip “Evolution of Short” by Pantograph:

Simplicity is just beautiful! There are ten other short clips with a diverse take on presenting the neat features of Chrome. It’s quite impressive that none of the clips had made mention of any of Chrome’s competitors, perhaps it’s a way to avoid the “ad-wars” between Apple and Microsoft.

Nonetheless, the clips does a good job of getting more attention for Google Chrome which according to reports, is still way behind Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox in terms of market share.

The biggest culprit is the lack of support for plugins and extensions which have become one of Firefox’s strongest selling points. I know many of my friends have been impressed by Chrome but stuck with Firefox because they simply couldn’t browse normally with their choice of extensions.

I on the other hand, have switched to Chrome as my default browser for it does a very good job of browsing the web without taking too much system resources that slow down my machine, which is what I really want in a browser.

However, there’s still great hope because the Chrome team are hard at work in bringing extensions-support to Chrome. When this happens, things will certainly look interesting in the browser wars.

What do you think of the Chrome Shorts? Do you already have a favorite clip?

I hope to watch tonight’s episode but that’s unlikely because tonight is the birthday celebration of my significant other. For now though, I’ll share a segment on last week’s episode of Bubble Gang that has been the talk of many in DLSUD as well as in all over the country this past week.

Bubble Gang’s spoof of the kid’s cartoon Dora the Explorer, which they aptly called “Chikadora ‘D Exploiter“. This one is just wreaking of awesome and humor.
