Downtimes are amongst the worst things that could happen to us bloggers. It disrupts our traffic, threatens to wipe out our content or databases, decrease our income stream, the lost in productivity and on top of it all, the aggravation and frustration it causes. I could stand being unable to blog or visit my site because my connection is lost or there is a power blockout. These things are quite tolerable and acceptable becuase we understand it. We know its nature, its causes and the solutions to it, even though we end-users are not the ones who really implement the fixes and remedies.

With server downtimes, it’s a lot different. Few amongst us bloggers and webmasters are not that adept and well-versed with the inner workings of our sites, the sort-of ‘under the hood’ stuff that powers our blogs. When servers really suffer downtimes, we are left wondering what could’ve caused it and if there’s something we clients could do about it, so as to help the tech support group instead of blaming them for what appears to be a lousy webhosting service. (Mind you though, for there are some really crappy hosting services out there.) After all, we bloggers and webmasters are the ones who really use the servers everytime we moderate comments, install a new plugin, test a new theme and so on. Looking at it this way, we do have a hand in keeping the servers healthy and running smoothly.

The name Pinoy Explorer, never rubbed off on me. It was fanciful but looking back at the past seven months of this blog’s existence, I’ve never really done justice to the name. I even consulted my non-blogging friends on this and they say the same thing. When they hear the name Pinoy Explorer before seeing the site, they have preconceptions that I have stories about my nature trips, expeditions, science experiments etc coupled with pictures there of.

Sure those are preconceptions but I find myself in the same standing as my anonymous-non-commenting-non-blogging friends/readers. Though I’d love to live up to the name, as of now I’m unable to do so. I’m still stuck in the classroom-laboratory setting of the University and I don’t even have my own digital camera. I have stories to tell, lots of them, still about science, biology, the web and other geeky stuff but I feel that the old name still didn’t fit me, it didn’t fit this blog.

In all honesty, I feel quite guilty because I blog to talk about health, science, technology, the internet, and yes politics not just for the heck of it, but each time I blog, I try to bring a message across. A message that has deeper meaning and would be of service to the ordinary folk, I want them to know that the subjects I write about could help improve their lives in more profound ways than one. Disabled persons are among them but it wasn’t until now that I may have been unmindful of them.

Now I don’t know if disabled persons have visited and read this blog before but when they do, I want them to have a good experience, not just be able to read what I write here but be able to leave with something positive and gainful for them. The best effort I have been able to pull off is adding that translation feature so that non-English speaking readers could read my content in their native languages. (It’s on the sidebar, just click on your respective flags and you’re good to go.)
