Influenza A(H1N1) alarmists should calm down

As of now, health officials peg the number of swine flu cases in the country to 57. Most of the new cases are students who have visited other countries with known infections of the A(H1N1) virus so it’s really not surprising that they will be infected too.

For now, we could only hope that the delayed opening of classes in the tertiary level has helped in detecting more cases of the swine flu and to mitigate its spread. Note that detection is the keyword instead of prevention because it’s impossible for us to stop getting our people infected.

Though prevention is better than the cure, in this case, early detection so that health care treatments could be delivered quickly is the best weapon we have against the swine flu. We should all be thankful that this is a mild form of the influenza and so far, those who were infected are responding well to treatments.

The spread of fear, paranoia and panic is way deadlier than any pathogenic virus.

As for the rest of us, we should remain vigilant, calm and be extra careful about our selves. We all know what to do to avoid getting sick so stick to those methods of proper hygiene, eating a well balanced and nutritious meal, and getting plenty of rest.

For those who have been to other countries, for God’s sake stay at home during the prescribed time of self-quarantine and don’t self-medicate just yet, because you’re not yet sick. If you show symptom of flu and your conditions do get worse, that’s the time to get medical help. This would prevent what others are being paranoid about, the virus evolving a new strain that’s resistant to current treatments.

In fairness to the government and the Department of Health in particular, they’ve been doing a great job of informing the public with all the necessary and up to date information from countdown of the most recent cases to preventive measures and providing health care treatments to infected patients and those who have come in close contact with them.

Both mainstream and new media have taken up the subject and that has contributed to an interested and informed public. Awareness is the first step to containing a would be pandemic. A rational, calm and thinking person is way better than a crowd of paranoid and in hysteria. So, to all those who are raising the alarms and claiming a pandemic, please, calm down, be informed and think twice before doing or saying anything. Especially if you’re not an expert on this matter. The spread of fear, paranoia and panic is way deadlier than any pathogenic virus.

If there’s anything to cause a great public alarm, are those ASS-holes in the Bastusan Pambansa who’s moving heaven and earth just to serve their greedy selves and that monster in Malacanan. But that’s for another post on another day.
